Diaries, 1827-1857 (7 vols.), and one volume containing 65 letters written to members of his family November 1836 - February 1837, while visiting Washington, D.C. as a guest of his former pupil, Congressman Aaron Ward. The diary contains an autobiography of his childhood and youth in Kingston (N.Y.), copies of his correspondence, and extracts from his reading, as well as records of his daily activities. In his diary he writes extensively and in considerable detail about such matters as: schools (particularly Oxford Academy, for which he acted as trustee), teachers, and education generally; horticulture (he kept an extensive garden); his law practice, with considerable detail about many of his cases; the law profession, with many personal appraisals of his colleagues; the courts, of which he was very critical; religious education and training; social morality; personal health and hygiene; village improvements; public affairs; business failures; rural life; home improvements; local events; politics, particularly at election time or when some national or state issue aroused him (he was a Whig for most of the period covered in the diaries); local travel; weather; self-improvement; visits to New York City, Kingston, and other travels; the character and reputation of friends, neighbors, and acquaintances; the Chenango Canal; political parties; his philosophy of life; entertainments; domestic life; temperance; and holidays. Neighbors and friends whom he often wrote of included: Aaron Ward, James Clapp, Henry Mygatt, John Tracy, John A. Sidell, John Clapp, Ransom Rathbone, Henry Balcom, and James A. Glover. The diaries also contain some newspaper clippings and ephemera, including two advertisements for the Oxford Academy. The letters from Washington, addressed to his brother Gerardus and Gerardus's wife and children, describe Washington and its social life, visits to Congress and the Library of Congress, meetings with many prominent people, and his uncle John Vanderlyn's commission to execute a painting in the Capitol Rotunda.

John Vanderlyn was born in Kingston, New York, where he worked for a print shop; he displayed an early aptitude for art, and was able to study with Archibald Robinson and Gilbert Stuart. Under the patronage of Aaron Burr, Vanderlyn became the first American artist to study in France.
